Modern Duvet Cover
What exactly is a modern duvet cover? I understand that floral duvet covers probably do not qualify as modern for anyone except my gran but if that is the case how do I tell her what a modern duvet cover looks like.
Like so many things “modern” is subjective and a word that moves around a lot as times change and tastes move on. A duvet cover sale during the 70′s would have featured totally different items to one in the mid or late 80′s and the duvet covers from the 80′s would look positively ancient today. While they may look ancient they would also probably be collectors items.

The main thing to understand is that today’s modern duvet cover will be the same one that your children all laugh about in 20 years when they meet up and discuss the funny haircut you had and the weird “old lady” bedding that you used to make them use. So don’t get too attached to any duvet covers as you really do need to change them as often as you can afford to.
What Makes A Duvet Cover Modern?
Not all covers are the same but there seem to be some general styles that are prevalent at the moment
- Solid colors
- Geometric shapes
- Rich dark colors or white with dark browns used for the shapes
- Bright bedding
Just because your duvet cover doesn’t get much wear and tear and will last forever it doesn’t mean that you should keep using it for that long. There are no rules that say you can’t buy a queen duvet cover set for every season. If you have more than one bedroom you could quite happily have a modern duvet cover set for each room along with a set of contemporary duvet covers and maybe some floral duvet covers just for when granny comes to stay.
When you think modern, try and thing beyond the latest big hit Disney film or kids cartoon. While your husband may love Nascar do you really want to sleep in a bed which is covered by a picture of a giant car?
Choosing a modern duvet cover is really more about color, patterns (or the lack of them) and the mixing of the two. Buying modern doesn’t mean that you have to buy something that clashes with the rest of your bedroom just so you can say you bought a modern duvet cover.
Buying duvet covers for your bedrooms is a totally private decision so whether you get a floral duvet cover or a modern duvet cover is really your own decision.
